At the intersection between grief, creativity and finance lies Bloomsbury, a special place of transition which has, over the years, seen many learn the art of making their own clothes as a way to move on and take back control of their lives. In this Financial Times article, we explore the stories of those who have come to Bloomsbury seeking a different kind of healing – a healing which puts the power back in their hands, and the hope and strength to joyfully carry on.
1. Bloomsbury: The Urban Retreat For the Grieving
Grief comes in many forms. Whether caused by the death of a loved one, a breakup, or even the onset of a debilitating illness, it can feel like there’s no safe place to process your emotions. If you’re looking for a gentle oasis in the city, look no further than Bloomsbury.
Located in the centre of London, Bloomsbury is an area rich in history and charm. A favourite of authors and intellectuals, it’s the perfect place to find respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. Here are some activities to take away the heavy weight of grief:
- Meander through sprawling city parks and gardens, allowing yourself the time to reconnect with nature
- Explore the many historical buildings and landmarks, and get lost in their stories
- Indulge in the food and culture of the local area, as a sweet reminder of the love and care of the people beside you
- Pay a visit to the British Library, where you can browse books of every kind and transport yourself to another world
Whether you’re nursing a broken heart or simply want to take a break from the hectic city life, Bloomsbury offers the perfect escape. Its calm and comforting ambience provides a much-needed retreat for those who are in need of it.
2. Sewing As a Tool For Coping With Loss
For many, sewing can be a powerful means of healing, particularly when dealing with the loss of a loved one. Sewing helps us to remind ourselves of happy memories of the past, and also celebrate special things we shared with our loved ones. It can be a great way of finding solace and calming down after a difficult period.
When you feel lost or confused, focusing on sewing can also be a great way of sorting through your thoughts. It could simply be mending something old that belonged to the person you’ve lost, or perhaps creating something new from scratch. In many ways, it gives you full control over your feelings and over the special memories that ultimately represent the best of your relationship.
- Put tears into stitches
- Create memory quilts
- Personalize something they used to own
- Celebrate special moments
- Find solace
- Focus on your thoughts
3. Crafting an Outfit That is Uniquely Yours
Crafting a unique outfit is equal parts art and science. It’s a way to express your style, pay homage to those you admire and create a unique look that feels like you. Here are a few tips to consider:
- Start with a piece that you love. It doesn’t matter if it’s a statement dress, a vintage jacket or a worn-in t-shirt – it’s the piece that will drive the rest of your look.
- Mix and match. It’s OK to mix different styles, colors, and textures – a bold combo will make your outfit stand out.
- Incorporate unexpected pieces. Put a modern spin on a style from another era, such as pairing old-school denim with a modern blouse and sneakers.
- Accessorize away. Accessories are your friend and can add a unique touch to any look. Scarves, jewelry, hats, belts – pick something that speaks to you.
Confidence is key. Whatever you decide to wear, wear it with the utmost confidence. You are the star of your look, but don’t forget to have some fun – smile, rock it, and don’t be afraid to draw some second looks!
4. Finding Comfort in the Creative Process
Expressing yourself through creative outlets can be an incredibly helpful way of coping with difficult feelings. When everything else seems overwhelming, creative processes can provide us with a safe haven, allowing our emotions to flow naturally and feel heard. Here are some of the ways we can find solace in creativity:
- Write down your feelings in a journal using creative writing, poetry or prose. Letting words pour onto the page allows us to explore our emotions and gain better understanding. Poetry can be especially special for the introspective soul, helping to organize those jumbled up thoughts in a meaningful way.
- Doodle and draw. This is a great way to relax and tap into our emotional intuition. Instead of worrying about creating a masterpiece, simply draw abstract shapes, or even color in a coloring book. These activities help our minds to slow down and can lead to finding clarity amongst the chaos.
- Music and dance. Put on some music you love and allow yourself to move your body as it wants to. You are bound to find amazing solace in the freedom of letting go and letting the music take you away.
- Play with colors and materials. Artistic activities such as painting, collaging, and sculpting are great for encouraging us to express ourselves, while still allowing for some emotional distance. It can even be helpful to assign each color a certain emotion, giving ourselves a visual representation of how we feel in the present moment.
Whenever we make something creative, we have the chance to add a little something of ourselves to this world. Taking time to focus on creating can give us a momentary sense of calm and peace, helping us to process our feelings in a meaningful way. Let your creativity be your biggest ally in a journey towards healing.
As I reflect on my experience of learning to make clothes, I have a better understanding of how grief can shape us and of the ways in which it can knock us down, as well as inspire us to reach new heights. Although I’m still at the start of my journey I can’t help but feel that by reviving the spirit of Bloomsbury, and seeking solace in the world of textiles, I have found a place for my grief and an avenue to make something truly unique.
