Former Louisiana State University football player Kyren Lacy has died, ESPN reported. He was 24 years old.
Lacy’s death comes a day before a grand jury was to take up his hit-and-run case that led to the death of a man in December.
Prosecutors alleged that Lacy was speeding on a highway in Chackbay, Louisiana, when he crossed a centerline into a designated no-passing zone. Two oncoming cars took evasive action and swerved out of the way.
One of the cars that swerved crashed into another vehicle head-on, killing 78-year-old passenger Herman Hall.
Lacy allegedly left the scene after the crash. He was later booked and placed in Lafourche Parish jail where he spent less than two hours before posting the $151,0000 bail.
Lacy was facing charges for negligent homicide, hit-and-run, and reckless operation.
In December, Lacy declared for the 2025 NFL Draft—two days after the crash.
“Playing in Death Valley, for the best fans in the country, was an experience I will never forget,” Lacy wrote in a statement. “Not too many people get to fulfill a dream like this. I am forever grateful for it. I want to express my appreciation to all my coaches, support staff, and trainers for helping develop me as a football player, but most importantly as a person.”
