Takashi Yamazaki’s ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ Teaser Trailer Brings Kaiju Chaos to New York City

Summary

  • Takashi Yamazaki has officially unveiled the first teaser trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero, the sequel to the acclaimed 2023 film
  • The narrative takes place in 1949 and shifts the monster’s destructive focus from Japan to New York City
  • Godzilla Minus Zero marks a milestone as the first Japanese film shot specifically for IMAX

The highly anticipated sequel to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One is officially on its way, with writer and director Takashi Yamazaki revealing the first teaser trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero. First showcased at CinemaCon before dropping online, the new preview amplifies the buzz for the upcoming film, promising another deeply emotional narrative intertwined with catastrophic kaiju action.

Set in 1949—two years after the events of the original film—Godzilla Minus Zero follows the survivors of the previous attack, specifically continuing the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity. As hinted at the end of Minus One, Godzilla has regenerated. However, the new footage reveals a major change in scenery: the iconic monster has now set his sights on destroying New York City. Actors Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe are confirmed to return to reprise their leading roles.

The original film became a massive global success, grossing over $113 million USD on a $15 million USD budget and making history as the first non-English language film (and first Godzilla movie) to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Looking to break its own records, Minus Zero has already marked a major milestone as the first Japanese film ever to be shot entirely for IMAX, promising an unprecedented, immersive theatrical experience.

Godzilla Minus Zero is currently scheduled to premiere on November 3, 2026, in Japan, followed by a United States theatrical release on November 6.
