Independent Swiss watchmaker URWERK has unveiled the UR-120 Blue Planet, the third and final iteration of its UR-120 model.
The watch features a striking two-part, interlocking sandblasted steel case – a signature design element of URWERK’s artistic director Martin Frei – rendered in a deep, cosmic blue tone. Measuring 47mm wide, 44mm long and 15.8mm thick, the smooth, screwless upper shell extends into articulated lugs, with a spring concealed in the 6 o’clock lug ensuring a perfect fit on the wearer’s wrist.
At the heart of the UR-120 Blue Planet beats the self-winding Calibre UR-20.01, a highly complex movement designed to not just indicate time, but playfully stage it. The watch utilizes a 4 Hz movement to drive a central carousel carrying three hour satellites that orbit alongside an analog minute track. As each satellite reaches the left-hand side of the case, a spectacular mechanical sequence occurs: the satellite splits apart to form a “V” shape, executing a genuine horological complication affectionately dubbed the “Vulcan salute”. This intricate choreography is controlled by a lyre-shaped spring and precise Maltese crosses, managing energy through 175 components within the carousel alone.
Adding an extra dimension to its deep blue architecture, URWERK has highlighted the lyre springs and Maltese crosses with a 24K yellow-gold PVD coating. According to master watchmaker Felix Baumgartner, this gold is not merely ornamental; it draws the eye to the active components where energy is stored, released, and transformed into motion. The movement, visible beneath a domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal, boasts a 48-hour power reserve and is adorned with high-end finishes, including circular graining, sandblasting, and Côtes de Genève motifs.
