Seiko’s New Prospex Marinemaster Watch Revives 1968 Diver DNA

Seiko has expanded its Prospex line with the release of the Marinemaster 1968 Diver’s Reinterpretation SLA079J, a professional-grade diver’s watch designed in a bold high-contrast black aesthetic.

Drawing direct inspiration from the brand’s legendary 6159-7001 from 1968 and the beloved SBDX001, this release cements the esteemed “Marinemaster” moniker for a new generation of dive watch enthusiasts. The timepiece masterfully balances Seiko’s enduring aquatic heritage with contemporary finishing, capturing the angular, robust case shape that defined its predecessors while elevating the overall aesthetic to modern luxury standards.

Sporting a striking high-contrast black textured dial, this is seamlessly paired with a matching hard-coated steel unidirectional rotating bezel. The stainless steel case measures a substantial yet highly wearable 42.6mm in diameter, 13.4mm in thickness and 49.3mm lug-to-lug, securing a commanding presence on the wrist. Designed for optimal legibility in the darkest environments, the applied indices and hands are filled with generous amounts of LumiBrite, while a discreet color-matched date window is neatly positioned between 4 and 5 o’clock. A dual-curved sapphire crystal with an inner anti-reflective coating ensures that the intricate details of the dial remain perfectly legible from any angle.

Beneath its rugged exterior, the SLA079J1 is driven by the precision-engineered Caliber 8L35, an automatic movement with manual winding capabilities. Operating at a high-beat frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, this 26-jewel caliber boasts an accuracy of +15 to -10 seconds per day and delivers a dependable 50-hour power reserve. True to its professional Marinemaster pedigree, the watch utilizes a screw-down crown and screw case back to achieve a serious water resistance rating of 300 meters. Available now through Seiko boutiques and authorized retailers, the Prospex Marinemaster SLA079J1 carries a retail price of $2,900 USD.
