The Television Academy has unveiled its nominees for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, setting the stage for what promises to be one of the most competitive races in recent memory. HBO Max‘s The Pitt led all programs with 25 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Noah Wyle, while Hacks made history with 24 nods in its fifth and final season, surpassing the previous comedy record of 23 set by The Bear in 2024 and matched by The Studio in 2025.
Apple TV posted a landmark showing across both the drama and comedy fields. First-year horror comedy Widow’s Bay, starring Matthew Rhys as the mayor of an island beset by supernatural phenomena, earned 19 nominations to lead all new series. Fellow Apple debut Pluribus, a dystopian sci-fi drama led by Rhea Seehorn, followed with 18 nods. On the limited series side, Netflix‘s second season of BEEF collected 16 nominations, while HBO Max’s DTF St. Louis earned 13.
Rhys emerged as one of the morning’s biggest stories, pulling double duty with a Lead Actor nomination in the comedy category for Widow’s Bay and a second in the limited series field for The Beast in Me. Jason Bateman similarly landed multiple nods across DTF St. Louis and Black Rabbit. In the comedy lead actress race, Lisa Kudrow and Jean Smart are poised for a head-to-head battle, representing the final seasons of The Comeback and Hacks, respectively. Meanwhile, in the drama categories, Euphoria was shut out of the Outstanding Drama Series race after a divisive final season but still collected acting nominations for Zendaya and Colman Domingo.
The ceremony will also see a restructured Outstanding Variety Series category. Following the Television Academy’s merger of scripted variety and talk series into a single field, the category now operates as an “area” award where any nominee clearing a 90% voter threshold receives a statuette, meaning multiple winners are possible. The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, which concluded its run in May with a star-studded series finale, enters the field alongside Saturday Night Live, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, The Daily Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
In total, 555 programs were submitted across the 14 major program categories this year, down from 600 last year. Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay will host the ceremony when it airs live on Monday, September 14, making her the first woman to host the Emmys in 15 years.
