Bandai Namco unveiled ‘Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO,’ launching a new multimedia universe in 2027.
Helmed by Kenji Kamiyama, the anime introduces protagonist Ray Azumi and the After Apocalypse timeline.
The series directly connects to the upcoming action video game ‘Gundam: Rogue Orbit.’
Bandai Namco Filmworks Inc. has officially ushered in a bold new era for its legendary mecha franchise, unveiling the “RG Project” alongside its flagship anime entry, Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO (pronounced “Alex Zero”).
Produced by SUNRISE and animated by SOLA ANIMATION, the upcoming series is slated to launch in 2027 with music composed by Go Shiina and mech designs by Eiichi Shimizu. The anime serves as the foundational narrative pillar of a shared universe that directly links to the upcoming high-mobility action game Gundam: Rogue Orbit, creating a cohesive media-mix experience that depicts a continuous world from distinct historical perspectives generations apart.
Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO begins this saga nearly a century before the events of Rogue Orbit, chronicling humanity’s struggle against the mysterious “Apocalypse” ecosystem unleashed by an alien object that once gifted revolutionary technologies like gravity control and FTL communication. The series follows protagonist Ray Azumi, a war orphan and pilot of Gundam ZERO, voiced by Takeo Otsuka.
Announced at San Diego Comic-Con, the multimedia initiative expands Gundam into a brand-new universe spanning both anime and video games, constructed around an ambitious generational narrative envisioned by acclaimed science-fiction filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) with worldbuilding co-developed alongside SF setting supervisor Toh EnJoe. Kamiyama describes the project as a chance to redefine Gundam outside the Universal Century and Common Era timelines, exploring what fundamentally makes Gundam “Gundam” while crafting a fresh vision.
