Six Flags Great Adventure unveiled Bakunawa, a record-breaking spinning giga coaster inspired by Philippine mythology slated to open in 2027
The ride will feature world-record-setting statistics including a 382-foot height, 100-mph top speed and the first floorless spinning coaster trains
Bakunawa serves as the centerpiece of a multi-year transformation for the park’s Boardwalk district
Six Flags Great Adventure has officially revealed Bakunawa, a massive new attraction set to become the world’s tallest and fastest spinning roller coaster when it opens in 2027. Named after a legendary sea serpent from Philippine mythology, the giga coaster serves as the culmination of the park’s highly anticipated Project Purple teaser campaign. The addition represents a major investment in the resort’s ongoing transformation of its Boardwalk district.
Bakunawa is engineered to shatter six world records. Riders will experience the fastest inversion at 80 mph and the first upside-down launch in coaster history. Utilizing free-spinning and floorless 20-passenger trains that rotate independently throughout the two-minute and 17-second journey, the attraction aims to provide a unique visual and physical sensation for every passenger across its 3,163 feet of track. The coaster features three distinct linear synchronous motor launches, beginning with an initial blast from zero to 60 mph.
After ascending high above the park, a final launch will propel guests to an exhilarating 100 mph before plunging down a 382-foot drop. The layout also incorporates the world’s longest stall inversion and a sweeping 180-degree bank spiral that offers sweeping views of the surrounding New Jersey landscape. To board Bakunawa, guests will need to meet a minimum height requirement of 48 inches. Park officials anticipate the massive structure will join an elite class of giga coasters globally.
The monumental project acts as the signature anchor for a revitalized seashore-themed area at the property. Representatives position the record-breaking construction as a defining milestone in a broader strategy to solidify the location as a premier regional destination for thrill-seekers. The nearby grounds recently received five new family attractions and introduced seasonal nighttime entertainment to encourage visitors to spend more time exploring the modernized space. Passholders who purchase season passes early will gain exclusive access to be among the first to experience the intense spinning action.
