Los Angeles-based design firm Ome Dezin has unveiled its latest residential project, a stunning 4,500-square-foot property nestled behind a gated drive on over an acre in the Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles. Originally built in 1997 by architect Jeffrey Mills, the contemporary home was initially conceived with a strong emphasis on natural light and a seamless connection to the outdoors. Over the decades, the residence has boasted a rich history, previously serving as an art gallery and the private residence of an A-list Hollywood actor. In its meticulous restoration, Ome Dezin preserved the property’s unique architectural history while thoroughly reimagining its aesthetic footprint.
Drawing direct cues from the original architecture and the surrounding woodland landscape, Ome Dezin altered 99% of the home’s interior surfaces to further soften the boundary between indoors and out. The refined material palette relies on warm woods, richly veined natural stone, sleek stainless steel, and expansive glass, creating a serene environment that feels deeply connected to its natural setting. A standout feature of the interior is a custom kitchen pantry framed by stained-glass doors; a hidden window positioned behind the glass casts beautiful highlights of color and natural light into the kitchen and hallway, bringing an artful warmth to the space.
The property’s most striking addition is a newly constructed, mirrored structure designed to house a sauna and full bathroom. Inspired by Doug Aitken’s Mirage – a famous mirror-clad home installation in the desert – the detached building essentially disappears into the forest, reflecting the landscape rather than interrupting it. A distinctive circular cutout acts as an architectural portal framing views toward the pool. In sharp contrast to its quiet, camouflaged exterior, the structure’s interior delivers a vibrant, otherworldly mood. The bathroom is enveloped entirely in two materials: kiwi-colored glass by Zia Tile and Palladium Arte Granite stone. This saturated palette draws directly from the vivid hues of brightly colored tree frogs, creating an immersive, nature-inspired experience.
